Love is Universal!

Eight absolutely ONE OF A KIND chibi Venus dolls will be made available at noon on Thursday, January 29th on our brand-spanking new Etsy Shop.
Each chibi Venus is entirely hand-made by MWGG creator, Lauren Faust, and is less than 3” tall. So tiny, all stitches had to be sewn by hand! All eight feature a unique facial expression, a stitched signature and date, and will come with it's own teeny weeny certificate of authenticity. Plus, you get to decide if you want your little Venus to be a magnet, a pin, or have a simple loop for hanging wherever you want her.

Mechan-chicks!
"A full-color 14 month wall calendar featuring women mechanics and their stories of how they entered into the non-traditional labor field of mechanics.
This unique and dynamic calendar includes automobile, motorcycle, hot rod, hybrid, marine, jet aircraft, bicycle, and race car mechanics. The project challenges stereotypes of the typical tool-girl, pin-up calendar by showing real women mechanics working in their shop environments."

“My inspiration to create the Female Mechanics Calendars came from my experience working as a carpenter and as a motorcycle mechanic in shops where I often felt like an anomaly for being a woman. I feel that it is so important for people to see that there are women who actually work these jobs, and can thrive if given the opportunity t learn. I am continually inspired by the people I have met while creating this project.”
-Sarah Lyon, creator of the Female Mechanics Calendars
Check out more here, and get one for a girl you know!
Can't help but think of my personal favorite female mechanic, Jaime Hernandez's Maggie of Love and Rockets fame. (You may want to wait until a girl you know is a bit older before you give them a issue of Love and Rockets, tho. But once they hit 16 or so, I recommend you do!!)

Felt Palettes
They totally sucked.
I didn't get why the swatches seemed to look all nice together then looked all weird when I made the little doll. I even made a second Milky Way and blew it again!
So I took a step back today. I took my awesome pack of 78 swatches and snipped them to bits to make rough color concepts that would help me get a really, really REALLY clear idea of how the final doll would turn out. Not only do I think I got it this time, but I think these little color concepts look really cool on their own!!!
(Jupiter is NOT drunk, BTW....)

Lots o' Little
I'm making 3 Mars-es and I cut out all the tiny parts first.
I've decided to make all the faces different, so each Chibi Mars will be one-of-a-kind......
...and have a hand-stitched signature on the back. Might number them, too. Haven't decided yet.
I ultimately decided to use more glue for the final design than the first. From now on I'll be gluing the arms and legs on. Usually I tend to be a bit puritanical about stitching everything and avoid using glue at all costs, but the glue works SO WELL with felt, I actually think it's sturdier. However, the head, body and hair will still be hand-stitched. Sewing the teeny, tiny body onto the head is BY FAR the most difficult part of making these!!! It's only 5 stitches, but it's soooooo small, it still takes me several minutes to make sure it looks nice.
I'm eager to make the other girls, but felt at the local craft store is woefully limited in the color department. Luckily, Prairie Point Junction (who I stumbled upon on-line while looking for more felt colors) has 78 colors! I ordered the sample pack and will be putting together palettes for Milky Way, Venus, Jupiter and Pluto.
I've got a real nifty plan for a complex art project with these little dolls, but in the meantime, I'll be making these little ladies available for purchase soon. I'll keep you posted.
